Abstract
The present review aimed to systematically investigate studies on Non-Suicidal Self-Injuries (NSSI) in South Korea. A total of 23 articles were selected from a systematic search covering empirical studies conducted in South Korea and published between 2000 and 2018. Studies on NSSI have begun to be conducted since 2009 in South Korea. Most of the studies were exploratory research on related variables of NSSI and only 4 studies included clinical samples. The Self-Harm Inventory (SHI) and the Functional Assessment of Self-Mutilation (FASM) were the most popular measures for NSSI and the use of validated instruments was limited. The first engagement of NSSI was found to occur around the age of 12. When compared to males, females were more likely to engage in NSSI, more frequently. The ways of inflicting NSSI were classified into active or passive methods. And the motivations of NSSI were classified into intrapersonal or social motivations. In addition, predictors and protective factors for NSSI were investigated among temperamental, developmental, affective and cognitive factors. The connection between NSSI and suicide and intervention programs for NSSI were also explored. Lastly, we discussed the potential implications of our findings and suggestions for future research.
